At the end of John’s Gospel, the tensive relationship between shock and transformation is operative, beginning especially with Jesus’ appearance to Mary Magdalene.
This question--"Whom do you seek?"--runs through the Gospel of John like a light red thread. It isn't overwhelming at first and it is easy to overlook, but once you see, you can't unsee it.
